Bow Hunting

Probably the most challenging method depending on the type of game hunted, is to hunt is by bow.  It is important to know that when hunting some of the more dangerous or bigger animals, only experienced bow hunters with the right equipment will ensure success.  Dangerous game hunting by bow requires special permits from Nature Conservation authorities. Hunt Africa will assist the bow hunter in getting the latest permits and documentation required to hunt any particular species.

Compound, long bows and re-curve bows are the most popular in South Africa.  It is also recommended to use a 60 pound plus draw weight bow. Bow hunting is usually conducted in three ways depending on your specific situation and species hunted:

1. The majority of bow hunts are made from permanently constructed blinds. These are situated approximately 20 yards from waterholes and salt licks. Blinds vary from elevated from the ground to sunken or on ground level, depending on the terrain, sun and wind direction. Animals bagged regularly through this method are Kudu, Impala, Blue Wildebeest, Zebra, Eland, Gemsbok, Red Hartebeest, Warthog and Nyala.

2. The stalking method is used for the more difficult species of game which do not frequent waterholes. Dense vegetation often makes it possible to get within bow range during certain months of the year and as a general guideline bow hunting is more successful during the months of August and September .

3. The most commonly used opportunistic method is locating animals while driving in a 4×4 vehicle. A large area can be covered without losing valuable time walking through dead terrain. Once suitable game has been spotted, the stalk is planned and the vehicle drives off leaving the hunter and Professional Hunting Guide in a suitable position. In some occasions the opportunity arises to place a hunter downwind behind suitable cover where after the game is driven towards him by trackers. Any species available in an area can be hunted in this way. An active game trail used by animals can also be used for putting up a tree stand or blind.

Rest assured that we will make every effort to tailor the hunt to suit your expectations and requirements whilst adhering to the highest ethical hunting standards possible.
